3D-Printed Splints vs Milled Splints: Material Properties and Clinical Accuracy

The choice between milled and 3D-printed splints depends on the clinical indication, required accuracy, and material properties needed.

Milled Splints

- Material: PMMA discs with certified biocompatibility

- Accuracy: 25-50 microns (excellent)

- Surface finish: Smooth, requires minimal polishing

- Best for: Hard occlusal splints requiring precise occlusal contacts

3D-Printed Splints

- Material: Light-cured resins (various durometers)

- Accuracy: 50-100 microns (acceptable)

- Surface: May require more post-processing

- Best for: Soft splints, night guards, sports mouthguards, try-in prototypes

For hard occlusal splints, milling provides superior accuracy. For soft splints and cost-sensitive applications, 3D printing is the better choice.
